The first grade program is that God loves us and gave us His son, Jesus, to show us His love. Students are learning about prayers, Mass, church community, become more familiar with the Bible and read the Bible stories every day.
The program is designed to promote good overall fitness. The activities are designed to improve coordination and being aware of different body movements.
The first grade language arts program is literature based, it focuses on developing phonemic awareness, reading comprehension and critical thinking. The students are introduced to compare and contrast, story elements, predicting outcomes and sequencing. Creative writing and writing into journals are practiced by first grade. The student will learn verbs, nouns, antonyms, synonyms, contractions and sentences, these are all for creating good strong readers and help the children build a good vocabulary. Spelling teaches the sounds of letters and how to use these sounds to read the words. The Six Traits of Writing help the children become more focused and expressive writers. Language arts skills are reinforced by the use of a weekly interactive bulletin board.
Students become problem solvers, algebraic thinking is developed. The program includes addition, subtraction, fractions, time, money, estimation and measurement. Students learn fact families and related facts.
This program lays the groundwork for the multilayered study of Science in grades 1 - 8. The class learns about plants and animals and the environment in which they live. The Earth and everything connected: natural resources, seasons, and the atmosphere and beyond is also covered. The year ends with the study of matter, motion and heat and sound.
Students are learning about our community, community helpers, basic map readings and geography. They are introduced to different cultures, traditions and about famous people and holidays. Students will build strong relationship with each other, with their teachers and the church.
The objectives of this program are to develop strong listening and speaking skills. Students begin to comprehend basic conversation and vocabulary about friends, classroom, house, family, animals and community. Vocabulary is reinforced and new words are added frequently. Most of the vocabulary is learned through hands-on activities, games, songs, charades and role playing. Spanish class is offered twice a week.
Students become familiar with computers, computer parts and basic computer knowledge. Utilize educational software that reinforces our Language Arts, Math and Reading programs.
